Population
Lefkas had approximately 24,000 inhabitants in 2017, of whom about 11,000 live in the capital Lefkada. The population density is approximately 67 inhabitants per km2. Lefkas has long been inhabited. The first inhabitants of Lefkas were according to mythology the Leleges. The father of the Homeric hero Odysseus, Laertes, leader of the inhabitants of neighboring Kefalonia, occupied Lefkas (then Niriko), where the place Nidri on the island is still named after. Archaeological research has shown that there was human civilisation on the island in the Neolithic period around halfway through the fourth millennium BC.
