Population

Karpathos has more than 7,000 inhabitants (2017). Many residents of Karpathos live in the capital Karpathos Town, which the natives call Pigadia. Most villages on Karpathos are located on the southern half of the island, only Avlona, the port town of Diafani and the characteristic Olympos are located on the northern half of Karpathos. In the high season, the number of inhabitants of the island triples due to the arrival of tourists and holidaying immigrant Karpathians.

The island of Kasos is located 7 kilometres southwest of Karpathos and currently has about 1,000 inhabitants, but at the beginning of the 19th century there were about 11,000. Of these, some 7,000 were killed in the massacre of 1824.
