Vacations and Sightseeing

Kefalonia was included in the top 10 'best islands in Europe' by the well-known site Tripadvisor in early 2014. Kefalonia finished sixth, and the top 10 also included the Greek islands of Naxos (2nd), Milos (5th), Santorini (7th) and Paros (10th).

Kefalonia is one of the most popular destinations of the Ionian Islands. Mountain villages surrounded by lush greenery, Byzantine monasteries, breathtaking scenery and beautiful beaches complete the tourist picture.

Almost all the towns and villages on Kefalonia suffered badly from the earthquake of 1953. Not much of the original architecture has survived. Only Fiskardo in the far north of the island was spared and the influence of the Venetian era is still very visible there. But also in other places, especially in the capital Argostoli, the influence of the Venetian and neoclassical architecture is still visible.

Kefalonia's most famous building, however, is the Bosset Bridge, named after its builder. The bridge connects Argostoli with an opposite shore and dates back to 1813.

Kefalonia has beautiful, clean beaches, almost all of which have been awarded the Blue Flag. The most famous beach is Myrtos, generally considered to be one of the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean.

Interesting museums are the Archaeological Museum, the Natural History Museum. The Ecclesialogical Museum of the Apostle Andrew of Milapedia and the Korgialenios Historical and Folk Art Museum.
