Vacations and Sightseeing
The island is a popular holiday destination for many people, approximately 700,000 tourists visit Zakynthos annually, most of whom stay in Laganás on the south coast. Other islands can be visited by fishing boat for example from Agios Sostis harbour like the island of Kefalonia. There is also a large ferry from Zakynthos to Patras and Kyllíni on the Greek mainland.
Very special are the "Blue Caves" of Zakynthos. The reflection of the light on the water gives a special blue glow on the different rock formations. Especially in the early morning, the colours are spectacular. You can find these caves near Agios Nikolaos and Skinàri Cape.
Zakynthos is also known for its Caretta-Caretta turtles. These turtles are also called "loggerhead turtles". They are found throughout the Mediterranean Sea, but hardly anywhere as many as on Zakynthos. The beaches of Kalamaki and Gerakas are closely guarded because the turtles like to bury their eggs in the sand here. Sometimes it is even forbidden to enter the beaches.
In the winter period, when the tourists are away, the income of many people on Zakynthos falls away. They look for work on the mainland and come back at the beginning of the tourist season. Besides many British, Zakynthos is also visited by Italians, Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians.
