There are many olive groves on Zakynthos. Most of the olives are used to make olive oil. The first (cold) pressing gives the quality "extra vierge". There is even a fruit-bearing banana tree here and there.
Also, on the central plateau, many grapes are grown for the production of wine. The Kalipado wine region is home to the island's largest wine factory (Callinico Wines), which was destroyed in the 1953 earthquake but reopened in 1968. The current factory has a capacity of several thousand bottles per hour. Some popular white wines are the Popolaro, the Calliniga and the Solomos. Zakynthos is also known for its "mandoláto" nougat.
About five kilometres from Zakynthos Town is the newly renovated airport, with spacious arrival and departure halls and modern facilities.
