Vacations and Sightseeing

The main tourist attractions of Kos city are the Johannine Castle at the harbour, the old excavated Roman Agora, and furthermore the beaches and excursions to the surrounding islands and to the Turkish town of Bodrum. A special attraction is the Asklipio. It is linked to the first doctor Hippocrates, the most famous inhabitant of the island of Kos. This former temple is the cradle of modern medicine. One of the attractions of the island is the Hippocratic tree, which is said to be the oldest tree in Europe and the place where Hippocrates gave his lessons.

Apart from the rich history and culture, there are also lovely villages and beautiful beaches. On the south-western side, the village of Kefalos has some fantastic beaches and small tavernas. Kardamena has perfect beaches that stretch for more than four kilometres. In the vicinity of Kos city, there are several charming villages on Mount Dikaion. Agios Dimitrios, Zia, Asfendiou and Lagoudi all overlook the sea. Pyli has ruins of a Byzantine fortress and is located in a green area of fields. Antimachia is located on top of a plateau with a large Venetian castle and two Byzantine churches. Kos is also attractive because of its flat coast. Therefore, there are plenty of bicycles for rent.
