Economy

In the 19th century, Spetses, like Hydra an island with a rich seafaring tradition, had many shipyards. Today, all that remains is a marina and a few ship repair shops. In the Baltiza area, wooden kayaks are built in the traditional way by about ten companies.

In 1914, the wealthy Spetsiot Sotírios Anárgiros had the hotel Poseidonion built, which, together with the construction of a coastal road, was the beginning of snobbish tourism on Spetses.

In summer, many British tourists visit Spetses, along with wealthy Athenians, as Spetses is certainly not a budget destination. Spetses Town has grown into a luxurious resort and the former shipowners' houses are now often second homes to the wealthy. Due to the economic crisis, the difference between the rich and the poor in this world, and therefore also in Spetses, is becoming painfully clear. While the rich still feast on the pleasures of life, most Spetsians can't even get a table in the local restaurants anymore.

There is no water on Spetses, so it is brought in daily by boat.
