Poros has a number of fish farms, where European sea bass and sea bream are successfully farmed. Poros town is the commercial and economic centre of Poros. Poros produces a high quality pine honey, with a perfect taste, deliciously fragrant and a dark coppery colour. Poros also produces a lot of olive oil, fruits and vegetables, including currants, citrus fruits, olives and tomatoes.
Car-free Poros has no airport, so can only be reached by boat. During the summer, several boats go to and from Piraeus, as well as to and from the islands of Hydra and Spetses. Ferries to and from nearby Galatas leave almost every half hour and one can also use boat taxis.
Just an hour's sail from Piraeus, Poros is a popular weekend destination for Athenians. The most popular tourist resort is Askeli, which has a beautiful, fairly large beach and most holiday accommodation, restaurants and other eateries.
