Climate and Weather
The Mediterranean climate of Naxos is very similar to that of the other Cyclades. In short, the climate of Naxos can be characterized as follows: dry periods in the months of April to September, August is on average the warmest month, February the coldest, January is the wettest month, July the driest. Naxos is therefore certainly not a winter sun destination, from April / May the weather on Naxos is only pleasant. It is striking that the transitional period between autumn and winter and between spring and summer is short. On Mount Zas (1003 meters) there is regularly some snow in winter.
The summer period on Naxos lasts from May to September and is generally warm, sunny and dry. In May, this type of weather already announces itself, because the average precipitation in that month is only 17 mm. The average temperature in May is about 22°C and the sun shines about ten hours a day, in short, an ideal period for tourists to visit Naxos. In June it starts to get much warmer with an average temperature of 25°C and daytime temperatures regularly around 30°C and thirteen hours of sunshine.
In July and August, the average temperature rises to around 27°C and at the hottest part of the day it is almost always (well) above 30°C. At night the mercury rarely drops below 20°C. The sea water is also becoming more pleasant, in July still 21°C, in August at its warmest with 23°C. In September the weather cools down to average temperatures of 24°C. The dry weather continues, however, with only 12 mm of precipitation.
The short autumn period, October and November, is characterized by mild temperatures and precipitation amounts that reach 51 mm in October and 66 mm in November. Still not much compared to the amounts that fall in Western Europe, but tourists should still expect heavy rainfall. The average temperature in October is still a nice 21°C and in November still 18°C. What is strongly reduced is the number of hours of sunshine per day.
The winter period, which lasts from December to February, is not yet a cold period with average temperatures of 13°C in January and February, the coldest months of the year. Rainfall is then decent with 102 mm in December and 105 mm in January. At night it can feel quite chilly due to increasing sea breezes.
The short spring period, March and April, is already much drier than in the winter months, with 63 mm in March and only 28 mm in April. The temperature in April can already be fairly pleasant with an average of 18°C.
As in other Cycladic islands, the weather of Naxos is affected by the "meltemia", a strong northern wind that blows during the summer and especially from mid-July to mid-August. Because Naxos is located in the middle of the Cyclades, it has an extra 'burden' of this wind. On the other hand, the meltemi also provides some cooling in the hot summers of Naxos and is of course ideal for wind and kite surfers, who therefore travel from around the world to Naxos to practice their sport.
