Vacations and Sightseeing
Tourism is an increasingly important source of income. From the 1960s onwards, the number of tourists increased and hotels and an airport soon followed. Today, tourists can choose from around 80 hotels and Skiathos is considered one of the most cosmopolitan Sporades. The release of the film Mamma Mia, in which the Skiathos and Skopelos islands were used as a set, caused a greater influx of tourists to the islands. Koukounaries beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Many tourists take a day trip around the island by kaik.
The main attractions of Skiathos, apart from the beaches, are the Castle of Kastro, the house of the important Greek writer Alexandros Papadiamantis that is now a museum, and old monasteries like Moni Evangelistria.
