Population
The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region has a population of almost 5 million (2017) and a population density of around 160 inhabitants per km2. Along the coast, the population density is more than 300 inhabitants per km2. The Côte d'Azur has about 1.5 million permanent residents and tourism provides another million or so visitors.
Most foreigners are no longer the English, as they used to be, but Arab migrants from countries such as Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
The ageing population is hitting the Côte d'Azur hard. The number of pensioners in this region, with approx. 25%, is far above the national average.
