Vacations and Sightseeing

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Côte d'Azur has slowly but steadily developed into the most important tourist area in France. One third of all workers earn their money in the tourist industry. Places like Monte Carlo and St-Tropez live almost exclusively from it, and in total, the tourists in this area spend approx. 5 billion euros per year. The Côte d'Azur accounts for more than one per cent of the global overnight market, more than 70 million per year.

Nice is the most important tourist centre in France and the largest seaside resort on the Côte d'Azur. Moreover, after Paris, it is the city with the most museums and galleries. The spectacular coast between Menton and Nice was named the 'Riviera' when it became fashionable as a winter destination in the 19th century. Cannes is, after Paris, the shopping city of France.

Monaco-Ville is the capital of the Principality of Monaco. The most famous attraction in Monaco-Ville is without a doubt the Prince's Palace, the Palais Princier. The Prince of Monaco and his family live in this beautiful building and there is a small Napoleon museum. The building dates back to 1191. Another special building in the city is the St. Nicolas Cathedral of Monaco-Ville. The church dates from 1875 and was built in Romano-Byzantine style. In the 13th century, there was already a church dedicated to St. Nicholas. The cathedral has a beautiful mosaic on the dome above the altar and the throne is also very beautiful. Several princes of Monaco and bishops are buried in the cathedral. The tomb of Grace Kelly's former husband, Prince Ranier III, is also in St Nicholas Cathedral.
