Vacations and Sightseeing
Most destinations on the island are located on the south and south-west coast. Playa de Santiago and Valle Gran Rey are the best known resorts, but La Gomera is especially attractive for hikers and nature lovers. European Union funds have been used, among other things, to restore centuries-old mountain paths used by shepherds and goat herders, and to renovate dilapidated farmhouses into comfortable country houses. At present, La Gomera has about 4500 tourist beds, but the ultimate goal is to achieve 8000 beds. Some ecological groups on the island have strong objections and think that the traditional island will become a tourist paradise. Most are scattered in the south: Valle Gran Rey, Playa Santiago, and San Sebastián. La Gomera attracts many Germans in the summer and Spaniards in the summer.
Proposals for the construction of an international airport have been rejected by both the central government in Madrid and the European Union in Brussels. The decisive factors were the disproportionately high costs of such an airport and the security risks. Nevertheless, an airport near Playa de Santiago was opened in 1999, but the runway is too short for foreign charter companies. The majority of tourists will still only be able to arrive from neighbouring Tenerife.
In the mountains and the north-eastern part of the island, traditional handicrafts such as pottery, typical crochet work, woven rugs, ceramics, hand-made drums ('tambores') and large castanets ('chacaras') carved from hardwood, are still practised.
