Approximately 1.5 million people live on all the Canary Islands together. La Gomera had around 25,000 inhabitants a few decades ago, but that number has since fallen sharply to around 21,000. (2017)
Of these, around 9,000 live in the capital San Sebastián de la Gomera. Hermigua is the second largest town on the island with around 1,800 inhabitants. On average, about 45 Gomeros live per km2.
Many inhabitants of La Gomera have emigrated to Venezuela in the course of time.
