Population

Thanks to its great agricultural importance, Antigua was briefly made the island capital in 1834-1835. In 1852 the entire Canary archipelago was declared a free trade zone. Fuerteventura's economy flourished as a result, partly due to the export of dyes, soda and lime. When Spain loses its last colonies, the economical situation of the Canary Islands deteriorates again. Fuerteventura has about 100,000 inhabitants (2017), of whom about 38,000 live in the capital Puerto del Rosario.

The islanders, also called 'Majoreros', are descendants of the Spaniards, the Normans and the ancient Canarians, the Guanches. These three ethnic groups have mixed with each other over the years.
