Economy

Until thirty years ago, the inhabitants of Fuerteventura mainly earned their money in fishing, cattle breeding and agriculture.

In earlier times, Fuerteventura was the granary of the Canary Islands, but this is no longer the case. A lot of farmland lies fallow because of the lack of water, making it impossible to work profitably. Although there is still a lot of cultivation in some places (barley, wheat, maize, potatoes, onions, tobacco, dates), this is only meant for the local market or for own consumption. For export, only some tomato plantations in the south are important.

Goat breeding (famous goat cheese: queso majorero) hardly makes any money anymore and the (outdated) fishing fleet is only used to satisfy the fish consumption on the island (mainly swordfish, tuna and sardine). Very important for the economy of Fuerteventura is tourism.
