Vacations and Sightseeing

Cahors the main city of the Lot lies in a bend of the river just as it was founded by the Romans about 2000 years ago. The city is friendly and welcoming. You can wander through the narrow old streets with medieval houses, baroque doorways and hidden gardens. Or you can relax on a terrace and watch the world go by. The Valentré Bridge is a beautiful 14th century fortified bridge. The bridge was an important part of the defence system protecting the city. It is now a part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Cahors is on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, many walkers pass through it on their way to Spain.

Every year, the small village of Rocamadour in the Parc Naturel Regional des Causses du Quercy receives more than a million visitors. This is because Rocamadour has been an important place of pilgrimage since 1000 years. This is because of the sanctuary of the Madonna, famous for its healing powers and because Rocamadour is on the pilgrim path to Santiago de Campostela. The second reason is because of the beautiful and dramatic location of the village on a cliff. The village essentially consists of only one cobbled street lined with medieval houses, The Grand Escalier (216 steps, pilgrims go up it on their knees) leads from the village to the shrines overlooking the old town. The sanctuaries are the Chapelle Notre Dame, which is home to the Black Madonna and the Basilica Saint-Sauveur. The Saint-Michel chapel, the palace of the bishops (Palais des Evêques) and three chapels are the other sights.
