Population
About 2.2 million people live on all the Canary Islands together. Lanzarote has about 160,000 inhabitants, of whom about 70,000 live in the capital Arrecife. (2017)
Little is still known about the original inhabitants of Lanzarote. The original inhabitants, called Majos by the islanders, came from North Africa in the 3rd century BC and were descendants of the Berber peoples living there. Why and how they got there is not clear. When the first Portuguese arrived, there were around a thousand Majos living in Lanzarote.
The original inhabitants of Lanzarote, the Guanches, mixed with the Spanish conquerors at the end of the 15th century.
