Climate and Weather

Due to the lack of high mountains, Lanzarote has a dry, mild desert climate with few climatic differences between the northeast and southwest. The nickname "island of eternal spring" is therefore not ill-chosen.

The mild climate is due to the north-eastern trade wind. This moist trade wind carries clouds at an altitude of between 600 and 1700 metres, which linger against the higher mountains of the other Canary Islands. Therefore, there is hardly any precipitation on Lanzarote, only about 200 mm per year. Most precipitation falls in the winter months of December to February.

However, clouds and wind do temper the temperature, and the Canary Current also has a moderating effect on temperatures. It can be oppressively hot in summer and the trade winds can cool it down considerably in winter.

The average temperature is between 21°C in January and 29°C in August. The sea water temperature is between 18°C and 22°C.

Lanzarote suffers a few dozen times a year from a hot, dry Saharan wind.
