Vacations and Sightseeing

Thanks to tourism, the economy of the Balearic Islands has experienced enormous growth and has become the richest province in Spain. Every year, around 8 million tourists visit Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca. On busy days in August, around 800 aircraft land daily at Palma de Mallorca airport! In high season, the ratio of tourists to islanders is 4:1. Formentera attracts approx. 150,000 tourists per year.

In the sixties, it slowly became clear that tourism would be a goldmine for the economically stagnant island. From the 1970s, Europeans began to arrive in large numbers and hotels, restaurants and apartment complexes were built. In the 1980s, tourism became an increasingly important part of Formentera's economy and the number of jobs also increased significantly, especially in the construction, hotel and catering industries. That this "monoculture" is dangerous became clear in the late 1980s. The growth of tourism declined sharply, as a result of which many businesses had to close their doors.

Because of the many tourists, nature and the environment came under increasing pressure. Fortunately, more and more attention is being paid to this. In order to preserve nature, about one third of Formentera was protected. This includes green zones and a 100-metre-wide coastal strip, which may not be built on. In addition, historical sites have been restored and embellishments made.
