Population
Formentera has about 12,000 inhabitants, of which about 1,000 are foreigners living permanently on the island (2017). The population structure is mainly determined by the difference between the inland and coastal areas. Many young people move from the interior to the coastal areas of the various islands in search of work in the tourist centres.
Furthermore, especially in high season, thousands of seasonal workers come from mainland Spain to the tourist resorts; most of them come from the regions of Andalusia and Catalonia.
Every year, around 8 million tourists flood the four largest islands of the Balearic Islands, including around 200,000 Dutch citizens. Formentera attracts around 150,000 tourists annually.
In the sixties of the 20th century, the hippies also "conquered" Formentera. The village cafe Fonda Pepe became world famous then and still is. The hippies were looking for paradise on earth and thought they would find it on the Pityusen.
