In order to preserve the island's natural beauty and originality, the island government of El Hierro allows a controlled form of tourism and is very concerned with environmental protection. The identity of the islanders must not be lost and traditional forms of life are also very important to preserve. Tourist accommodation is therefore limited to around 800 beds and tourism is not yet a major factor in El Hierro's economy.
The Valle del Golfo in the north-west of the island is developing into El Hierro's most popular destination with more and more hotels, restaurants and shops. Some of the best wine grapes in the Canaries grow on the cliffs in this area.
From the harbour of La Restinga, a large fleet of small cutters sails out every day to supply the island, and especially the restaurants, with fresh fish. The diving area around La Restinga is one of the most beautiful in Europe, which ensures an increasing flow of diving enthusiasts to El Hierro; there are also three professional diving schools located here.
There is no industry on El Hierro, but the crafts flourish, especially pottery, weaving and woodcarving. Local products are mainly sold to tourists.
