Vacations and Sightseeing
Today, tourism is an increasingly important source of income. The major attractions are the river Dordogne itself and the many prehistoric sites. The highlight is the caves of Lascaux with the famous prehistoric cave paintings. The caves were discovered in 1940 by four boys who had lost their dog. These caves are the highlight of a visit to the area. The original caves were damaged by the number of visitors and were closed in 1963 to stop further damage.
In 1983, Lascaux II was opened, which is an exact copy of the original. It is so realistic that unless you know it is a reproduction you do not notice it. The paintings are almost all animal and the colour is amazing. Outside Lascaux, there are numerous smaller caves to visit. Many foreign people have a second home in the Dordogne.
