Vacations and Sightseeing

Tourism is by far the most important economic sector on the Costa Del Sol. In this area, there are beautiful beaches and abundant sunshine.

Important tourist centres are Torremolinos and Marbella. If you visit Torremolinos, it is a nice trip to one of the authentic fisherman's districts of Torremolinos. In La Carihuela, El Bajondillo and El Calvario you can still find that authentic Spanish atmosphere. You can stroll through the steep, narrow streets, see small fishermen's houses and then eat delicious, fresh 'pescadito' (fried fish) in the cosy fish restaurants. Mass tourism is seen by the population as both a blessing and a curse.

The hinterland ( Andalusia) has many cultural attractions and highlights such as the Alhambra in Granada and the cities of Seville and Cordoba.

Nerja was in the past a quiet fishing village. Nowadays, Nerja attracts many tourists every year with its beautiful beaches, pleasant climate and green nature. In Nerja, you will also find one of the most visited attractions in Spain: the Caves of Nerja. The Cueva de Nerja, a stalactite cave near the centre of Nerja, is one of the most visited cultural attractions in Spain. The cave, which dates back to Paleolithic times, contains stalactites and stalagmites. It is one of the largest caves in Europe, with a corridor system of 5 kilometres. There is even a stalactite found in the cave that is 32 metres high. Nerja is also known for the Balcón de Europa. This is a boulevard in the centre of the town that was built on a rock in the Mediterranean Sea at a height of 23 metres. The original boulevard was already built in 1487 and has been restored several times since. It is always busy here. Read more on the Nerja page.
