Until 1789, France was administratively divided into 34 provinces, but since the French Revolution it has been divided into departments, of which there are currently 100. These in turn were grouped into 26 regions in 1972. The Loire Valley extends over two regions. In the Centre-Val de Loire region, the Loire flows from east to west through the departments of Loiret, Loir-et-Cher and Indre-et-Loire. In the south-east, it forms the border with Burgundy at the edge of the Cher department. For the current political situation in France, see the history section.
