Along the Loire, rare plant species such as plantain and sedges grow. Animal species include the little tern, wild goose, spoonbill, plover, sedge warbler, wild duck, corncrake, beaver and otter. On the tributary Allier, the marsh turtle can be found. Fish species such as whitefish, bream, eels, pike and perch also feel at home in the Loire. Even the salmon, which has been protected for many years, is turning up more and more often.
