The population of Alsace is predominantly Catholic, approximately 20% is Protestant. This Protestant belief is a remnant from the time when Alsace was still a German region. Therefore, the protestants of Alsace mainly follow the Lutheran faith.
Remarkably, the Protestant faith has never been prohibited in Alsace, unlike in the rest of France. Most Protestants live in the cities and in the industrial south around the city of Mulhouse. Priests are only paid by the state in Alsace.
Nowadays, each village still celebrates its patron saint. Such a 'fête patronale' is called 'messti' in the Bas-Rhin department and 'kilwe' or 'kilbe' in the Haut-Rhin department. The patron saint of Alsace is Odilia.
