Population
The population of Alsace is approximately 1.8 million. The population density is 211 inhabitants per km2, which is twice the French average. Strasbourg (ca. 650,000), Mulhouse (ca. 250,000) and Colmar (ca. 90,000) are the largest cities in the area (all incl. agglomeration). In Alsace, more than 60% of the population lives in cities.
In 1999, the ageing of the population was a fact and, for the first time, there were more people aged 60 and over than people under 15.
The individuality of the Alsatians has been maintained despite various subjugations. Characteristic of the mentality in this region is the motto 'Français ne puis, Allemand ne veut, Alsacien suis'.
