History
The first European settlement in what would later become the province of Saskatchewan, Cumberland House, was a trading post of the Hudson's Bay Company, founded in 1774. Before that time, the area was inhabited by the Athapascan, Algonkin and Nakota-Sioux Indians.
In 1870, the area came under the jurisdiction of the Northwest Territories and after the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the population increased rapidly. Finally, on 1 September 1905, the Province of Saskatchewan was created and admitted to Canadian confederation as the 9th province.
