Population
In total, Provence has around 5 million inhabitants in 2017. Approximately 90% of all inhabitants live in cities. The departments of Bouches-du- Rhône, Vaucluse and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence differ considerably in terms of population size and population density. Three quarters of the inhabitants live west of the Ciotat-Valréas line and the population density here is around 200 inhabitants per km2.
Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, with only about 140,000 inhabitants and a population density of 20 inhabitants per km2, is one of the least densely populated departments in France.
Bouches-du-Rhône has more than 1.8 million inhabitants, more than 40% of whom live in urban agglomerations, including Marseille. The eastern part of this department is one large urbanised area. It is striking that many people of mixed origin, especially from Algeria, live here. Marseille is even the second Algerian city after Algiers, the capital of Algeria.
The Vaucluse has approximately half a million inhabitants, 20% of whom live in the regional capital, Avignon.
