Population
Languedoc-Roussillon has about 2.7 million inhabitants (2017) and has had the strongest population growth in France for several decades. This is mainly due to a number of large waves of immigration from Italy, Spain and North Africa, but many older people from northern parts of France and North-Western Europe also come to enjoy the attractive living conditions in Languedoc-Roussillon. This does mean that the average age of the inhabitants is quite high; 25% of the inhabitants are over sixty.
The population density of Languedoc-Roussillon is about 100 inhabitants per km2. The Lozère is the least densely populated department of France: with approx. 75,000 inhabitants it has an average of only 14 inhabitants per km2.
Approximately three quarters of the population live in an urban or semi-urban zone. African immigrants make up 10% of the population of the coastal areas.
