Vacations and Sightseeing

About a quarter of government revenue comes from tourism, with expensive hotels and posh entertainment venues being the main sources. Hotel stays can therefore only be afforded by the wealthy and business travellers; day trippers stay in nearby places in France and Italy. Monaco attracts many millions of tourists every year, most of whom come from Italy, the United States and France. They are followed by the English, Germans, Swiss and Japanese.

Since the second half of the 19th century, the Monte Carlo Casino and gambling in general have been an important pillar of the Monegasque economy. At present, however, it contributes less than 5% to the economy (in 1890 about 90%!!), which at least contributes to the government's efforts to break the negative image of Monaco as a gambling state. Nevertheless, the casino remains one of the most important reasons to visit Monaco.

In the oceanographic museum and aquarium you can enjoy more than 4,000 fish and sea creatures and see history through films, displays and exhibits. This is a great place for children. There is also a cosy restaurant with a spectacular view.

The Formula 1 Grand Prix is an event that attracts a lot of attention from all over the world. You can contact the Automobile Club Monaco and book tickets at often astronomical prices. But don't despair, you can experience the spectacle from your hotel room overlooking the circuit if you arrive early enough.
