Language

The official language of Monaco is French, and furthermore, especially the older indigenous population still speaks Monegasque or 'U Munegascu', a Romance language that is related to modern Ligurian. Monegasque is also very similar to the language spoken in Genoa, Italy, but differs considerably from, for example, nearby Menton. Monegasque is also strongly influenced by Occitan.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the language was almost extinct, but now it is being taught in schools again and therefore its survival seems assured. Monegasque literature is flourishing.
