Portugal has 10,200,000 inhabitants (2024). Many Portuguese live abroad, mostly for economic reasons. After the decolonization of Angola and Mozambique, hundreds of thousands of so-called retornadoes have returned to the motherland. Some of them emigrated to Brazil after some time.

The population density varies greatly from region to region. Large population concentrations are located in and around Lisbon and Porto and Madeira. Yet Portugal is a sparsely populated country with just over 110 inhabitants per km2.
