Vacations and Sightseeing
After textiles and sugar cane, tourism is the third largest source of income for Mauritius. About 15,000 Mauritians earn their living in the tourism sector.
The first 50 tourists arrived in Mauritius in 1952. The number of tourists coming to Mauritius annually is currently about 500,000. The tourists come mainly from France (160,000), Réunion (83,000), Britain (51,000), South Africa (50,000), and Germany (43,000). For Europeans, December and January are the most popular months.
The government has a tourist policy which is more interested in quality than quantity. For the backpacker Mauritius has not much to offer.
Mauritius has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Each one has a particular tropical marine flora and fauna, sheltered by coral reefs. The turquoise lagoons, the golden sand and the warm sun are the main attractions. Each beach will leave an unforgettable impression. Grand Baie, considered the Côte d'Azur of the island, with a wide variety of hotels, boutiques, restaurants and nightclubs. Pereybère, Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches are among the best places for swimming in Mauritius.
A network of hiking trails criss-crosses the wild and empty Black River Gorges National Park. The signage is not always good, so check the route and conditions at the information centres before setting off. See the rare tambalacoque (dodo tree), black ebony trees and wild guavas. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for the Mauritius kestrel, pink dove, echo parakeet and Mauritius cuckoo. This national park is vast and its forest covers 3.5% of the island's surface. The forest is home to more than 300 species of flowering plants and nine bird species that are unique in the world.
