The main religion on Mauritius is Hinduism. About 52% of Mauritians are Hindus, mostly orthodox. There are more than 150 temples on the island. The most important festival for Hindus is the Maha-Shivaratree festival in February. More than 300,000 Hindus gather on that day. Some Hindu cults are Kabir Panthis, Rabidass and Hare Rama Krishna.
Christianity was the first religion in Mauritius and today about 30% of the population adheres to a Christian group. There are about 250,000 Roman Catholics and also Anglicans, Presbyterians, Adventists, Jehovah's and Methodists, among others. On the island of Rodrigues, approximately 97% of the population is Roman Catholic.
Muslims make up about 16% of the population. Most Mauritians of Chinese descent have become Roman Catholics. There are only about 3000 Buddhists and a few dozen Confucians.
