The "Tree of Life" (Shajarat-al-Hayat) in southern Bahrain is a nearly ten-meter high solitary Prosopis cineraria, in fact a thorny shrub, over 400 years old. The tree is on a hill in the Arabian desert, two kilometers from Jebel Dukhan, the highest point in Bahrain, and 40 kilometers from the capital Manama. In this very dry climate, the tree finds water thanks to roots that grow up to 50 meters long.
