The widely spread Letzeburgsch, a German dialect, was for a long time considered an unimportant local dialect. Slowly but surely, a "standard Letzeburgsch" emerged from the various dialects and has been the official language since 1985. The official spelling was regulated by law in 1975. However, the official language in legislation, administration and jurisprudence is still French, in commerce it is mostly German, and most newspapers and magazines are published in German.
