The Icelanders are descendants of the Vikings mixed with Scottish and Irish immigrants. In 2017 there are 339,747 inhabitants. The largest group of foreigners is the Danes. Only 18% of the island's total area is inhabited, especially the south and west coasts. About 6% of Icelanders live in rural areas and the rest live in cities and towns. Most of the population lives in the capital Reykjavik and the surrounding area. The population of Reykjavik is approximately 200,000.
