Bavaria, with Munich as its capital, is Germany's number one holiday and travel destination. A holiday in Bavaria guarantees a varied holiday time, because culture, traditions and old customs in medieval towns, but also in a bustling metropolis like Munich, are nowhere as well preserved as in Bavaria. The Oktoberfest in Munich, the largest folk festival in the world with more than six million visitors, has been an excellent example of this since 1810 (!).

For culture lovers, Bavaria also has more than 100,000 architectural monuments and more than 1,200 museums on offer. Nature lovers will also get their money's worth in Bavaria with forests, lakes, rivers and mountains in national parks and nature reserves. Ideal for those seeking tranquility, cyclists, mountain bikers, hikers, mountaineers and skiers, who can ski and cross-country ski all year round on the highest ski area in Germany, on the Zugspitze.

In Bavaria, many beautiful tourist routes have been set out, including the 'Deutsche Alpenstrasse', where you can immediately visit the world-famous castle of King Ludwig II, the fairytale Schloss Neuschwanstein. Other routes are the Castle Route and the German Alpine Route, which lead through a varied landscape with castles, baroque churches, monasteries and fortresses.

Bavaria has a number of World Heritage Sites on its territory: the Würzburg Residence, once the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg built in the period 1720-1744, is one of the most important European Baroque castle complexes in Europe; the Limes, a Roman border wall with many preserved Roman remains in Central Europe, running from Bad Hönningen / Rheinbrohl on the Rhine to Regensburg on the Danube; the historic center of the city of Bamberg, built on seven hills like Rome; the historic town center with Stadtamhof in Regensburg with 984 listed buildings, including the famous medieval Steinerne Brücke; the pilgrimage church 'Zum Gegeißelten Heiland' in Wies near Steingaden is one of the most famous rococo churches in the world.

A less obvious 'holiday destination' is the Nazi concentration camp Dachau, officially KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau, sixteen kilometers northwest of Munich. Dachau, designed by Heinrich Himmler, was already in use in 1933 for the internment of political prisoners. Ultimately, approximately 200,000 people, including Jews, Sinti, Roma and communists, were imprisoned, of which at least 32,000 were killed, but it is more likely that the actual number was over 40,000, partly due to terrible medical experiments.
