Population
There are 1.637 million inhabitants in Sardinia (2013). One third lives in the big cities. The majority still lives in villages with not much more than 1000 inhabitants. The population density is about 70 inhabitants per km2. The most densely populated is the province of Cagliari; the province of Nuoro is the least densely populated with about 40 inhabitants per km2.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, the population has doubled, despite the fact that more than 400,000 Sardinians emigrated over time.
