Vacations and Sightseeing
Tourism has been on the rise, especially since the late 1970s. However, Réunion faces stiff competition from neighbouring Mauritius, which is much cheaper and has much nicer beaches. The most beautiful beach in Reunion is Boucan-Canot in the west of the island.
There are also working volcanoes such as the Piton de la Fournaise and beautiful waterfalls.
Most tourists come from France and Mauritius. In 2000 Reunion was visited by about 400,000 tourists, 59% were first time visitors.
