The Catholic faith is dominant in Réunion (86% of the population), recognisable by the many altars along the roads and in caves.
Hindus and Muslims can practice their religion freely and most of the large cities have a temple and a mosque. There has been a remarkable fusion of religious views in recent years. Catholic rites and customs have been mixed with Hindu customs.
The Chinese community does not celebrate many religious festivals apart from the Chinese New Year. There are also many people who follow more than one religion: they worship saints, but also sacrifice to Hindu gods.
