Climate and Weather

Due to the high mountains, the climate varies more than in Mauritius. Nevertheless, there are really only two seasons: the hot, rainy summer lasts from October to March, and the winter lasts from April to September and is the driest period of the year. The east coast is wetter than the west coast and the wettest regions are the east coast highlands, the Takamaha region, the Plaine-des-Palmistes and the northern and eastern slopes of the Piton de la Fournaise. Temperatures on the coast range from 21°C in winter to 28°C in summer. In the mountains, temperatures drop to an average of 12°C in winter and 18°C in summer. Most rain falls from January to March and this is also the time when the risk of cyclones, hurricanes and spring tides is greatest.
