Population
Mauritius has a population of 1,356,388 (2017) and the population is growing at a rate of 0.59% per annum (2017). Just under half of the population lives in the cities. The population density is high with about 689 inhabitants per km2. This makes Mauritius one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Approximately 150,000 people live in the capital Port Louis. The population is very young; 35% of the population is under the age of 25. Life expectancy is 75.8 years on average (2017).
The population of Mauritius is an interesting mixture of many races: Chinese, French, Muslims, Creoles and Indians.
Hindus make up about 50% of Mauritius' population and are represented in all walks of life. A quarter of the population are Creoles, often of mixed European-African origin. They generally belong to the poorer section of the population. Most Creoles live in the southern part of Mauritius.
Muslims come from Pakistan, India and Arab countries and make up about 17% of the population.
The Chinese form a small minority, about 3% of the population. This group consists largely of traders and generally belongs to the wealthy class.
The people of European, often French, descent are descendants of the 18th century settlers and make up about 3% of the population. They mostly work in tourism and government. The Mauritian standard of living is far above the African average.
The island of Rodrigues has about 37,000 inhabitants.
