Tourism revenues contribute 8% to the GDP. About 10 million tourists visit Hong Kong every year, half of whom come for shopping! Most tourists come from China, Taiwan, Japan, the United States and Europe. Walt Disney has opened an amusement park on the island of Lantau. They expect to eventually attract more than ten million visitors per year. They also expect to employ 35,000 people within twenty years.
When the sun goes down, traders have their wares on display and opera singers and fortune tellers come to life at the Temple Street Night Market. This is a popular street bazaar, named after the Tin Hau temple. This place is steeped in local atmosphere and has served as a backdrop for many films. Trinkets, tea, electronics, watches, menswear, jade and antiques are viewed and traded. Rice, seafood, noodles and other delicacies are served here every night.
