Vacations and Sightseeing
In recent years, major investments have been made in the development of tourism. The reasons for booking a holiday to the Dominican Republic include its favourable location, pleasant climate, beautiful landscape and, of course, the many 'bounty island' beaches.
Most tourists come from the United States, Canada, France, the Netherlands, England and Spain. The tourist industry provides direct employment to 44,000 people and indirect employment to 110,000 people.
An important tourist centre is Puerto Plata. From the colonial period, a number of sights have remained that are definitely worth visiting when you travel to Puerto Plata. The fortress of San Felipe in particular will catch your eye. This 16th century fort was built to protect the city from French and English pirates. Puerto Plata is also home to a beautiful cathedral, the Cathedral of San Felipe, which dates back to 1934.
Another tourist centre is Punta Cana. The beautiful white beaches and rich nature make Punta Cana special. A coastal strip of no less than fifty kilometres can amaze you every day with a beautiful stretch of beach. Just fifteen minutes from the airport is the Punta Cana Ecological Reserve. Walking through the jungle, you will be amazed by the rich tropical vegetation. Apart from the rich nature, the beautiful beaches are a sight to behold. Golf course enthusiasts will also have a great time here.
