Climate and Weather
The Mediterranean climate of Tuscany does not vary greatly, although the change of seasons is clearly noticeable. Both on the coast and inland, the differences are relatively small, especially in terms of temperature. In the south-west, it is on average slightly warmer than in the north-east. The mild climate is partly due to the relatively warm Tyrrhenian Sea and the location in relation to Corsica. This large island keeps a lot of precipitation away.
The Tuscan summers are generally dry and warm, and it rarely rains in July and August. The temperature is always above 20°C during the day from June to August and can easily reach 35°C in the summer months. Thanks to a permanent breeze from the sea, the climate on the coast is fairly pleasant even in the summer.
The Tuscan winters are usually mild and it only snows in the mountainous areas. The Monte Amiata and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines near Abetone are even winter resorts. The winter temperatures in the rest of Tuscany are generally between 6 and 10°C.
As far as precipitation is concerned, there are some major differences. The least rain falls on the coast of southern Tuscany, the most rain falls in the Apennines and in the Apuan Alps. The Apuan Alps are the wettest part of Tuscany with about 3,000 mm of precipitation per year. Most rain falls in the months of October, November, April and May. Especially at the end of autumn, heavy rainfall can last for days.
Regularly the "libeccio" blows from the south-west, which can sometimes reach gale force. Especially in spring the "maestrale" blows from the northwest, a cold fall wind. In the winter, the "tramontana" sometimes blows inland, bringing cold polar air.
