Vacations and Sightseeing
San Marino has steep slopes, cliffs and castles and these are impressive enough in themselves, what really takes your breath away is the view from the city. On a clear day, you can see the Adriatic Sea a few kilometres to the east and the hilly lands of central Italy in other directions.
The main attractions of San Marino are the three defensive towers, La Guaita, La Cesta and Il Montale. La Guaita and La Cesta can be visited with a combined ticket. The fortifications were restored in the 1940s thanks to the film industry, which used the republic as a film set.
There are several forest trails with rather confusing signs, the natural greenery being a contrast to the busy streets nearby.
As an independent state, San Marino also has its own stamps and postal system. To send a card from San Marino, just buy a stamp in one of the city's shops. Make sure you post your cards in one of the white mailboxes before you leave.
San Marino's main museum is the State Museum (Museo di Stato), which contains historical exhibits and works of art.
There are also many smaller attractions in San Marino, the wax museum and weapon museum. Car enthusiasts may want to make a diversion to the Museo di Auto d'Epoca at the foot of Monte Titano.
The most interesting church is the Basilica of San Marino, which preserves the sacred bones of the fourteenth-century Chiesa di San Francesco.
