Tourism as an economic factor is fairly new on Rodrigues. Not so long ago, Rodrigues was one of those places in the world that was visited only once a month by a supply boat. At present, small planes fly daily from Mauritius to Rodrigues with tourists on board.
Tourism can therefore provide a major boost to the island's economy. At present, there are two hotels and a number of guesthouses, all built in the last five years. Annually, Rodrigues is visited by approximately 40,000 tourists. The waters around Rodrigues are widely regarded as one of the best deep-sea diving spots in the world.
The island's only year-round port is Port Mathurin. The only airport is at Pointe Corail in the southwest.
